New Collection System Maintenance Grades 2-4 Exams Launch July 1st!

CWEA’s Collections System Maintenance (CSM) certification program is the widely recognized standard for collections professionals in California. With over 3,800 certificate holders statewide, the CSM certification continues to progress in accordance with the evolution of the water sector and certification professional practices.

CWEA is excited to be completing a comprehensive update of the CSM certification program this year! Over 450 subject matter experts contributed to this effort, representing over 5,040 years of collective experience in the field. The result will be high quality exams that reflect current practice and an improved candidate experience.

Following the release of the Grade 1 exam last year, the new exams for Grades 2-4 will launch on July 1st, 2020. Along with the new CSM exams, new Minimum Qualifications to apply will be put into place. Anyone wishing to test will need to qualify under the new Minimum Qualifications. Please continue reading below for more details about the rollout:

The new Minimum Qualifications will allow our exams to become more focused and accurate measures of job knowledge, while ensuring a greater degree of competency by requiring those who are certified to demonstrate their mastery of journeyman level job knowledge before progressing to the management level certifications. It also reduces the number of years required to qualify for the Grade 2 and clarifies and broadens the degree requirement.

Under the new Minimum Qualifications, applicants will need to hold the lower level certification to qualify for the Grade 3 or 4 exam.

Current CSM Grades 2 – 4 applications will stay active until June 30th, 2020. Applicants must test or cancel their application on or before that date. Canceled applications will receive a refund, minus a $40 admin fee. Applicants wishing to test after June 30th, 2020 must submit a new application.

CWEA is planning to release a CSM Handbook in April of 2020. Included in the handbook will be the exam blueprints, suggested references, exam policies and certification renewal information. Be sure to check our website in April for the release.

If you have any questions about how these changes may affect you, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Certification Department at [email protected] or (510) 382-7800 ext. 126.
