New Mechanical Technologist Certification Exams Launch January 2015

By Vivien Malig, CWEA Certification Manager

On January 1, 2015 CWEA is launching a new set of Mechanical Technologist certification exams as part of the periodic updates of our certification vocations. The new exams will be delivered through CWEA’s computer-based testing network to over 120 locations in California where certification tests can be taken conveniently almost any day of the year with results given immediately after completing the test.  Over the past year, our CWEA subject matter experts volunteered their expertise to ensure the exam Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) reflect the competencies, practices, and technologies essential to mechanical technologists here in California.  They created new test questions to support the updated KSAs and, most recently, approved the set of new test forms.

With the release of the updated tests we are also introducing a new CWEA Mechanical Technologist Grade 1 certification. Now, Mechanical technologist is offered in all four grade levels.  Since we now offer Grade 1 Mechanical Technologist and Grade 1 Electrical/Instrumentation Technologist certifications, the Plant Maintenance Grade 1 exams will be phased out on January 1. However, current Plant Maintenance Grade 1 certifications will remain valid as long as they are renewed annually and the continuing competence requirement is met.

Certification Prep Materials Updated

As part of CWEA’s ongoing efforts to make sure we support the professional development of our members and certificate candidates, we have updated our mechanical technologist study guides and our study session moderators are now using the new KSAs in their study sessions. If you’re scheduled to take a Plant Maintenance or Mechanical Technologist exam in 2014, keep using the old study guides that are still available at mycwea.org. If you are registered for a study session and taking the Plant Maintenance, let the study session organizers know ahead of time so they can be sure your KSAs are covered. If you’re scheduled to take a Mechanical Technologist certification test in 2015, make sure you download the updated study guide also from mycwea.org. The new guides should give an indication which one you should be using depending on your test date. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 510.382.7800 x100.

Release of new Mechanical Technologists tests recognize new (and existing) industry leaders

CWEA recognizes the following subject matter experts for their volunteerism, leadership and their dedication to the industry by ensuring working on the mechanical technologist certification revalidation program. Also making this effort possible are the employers that supported our subject matter experts through this important project, thank you.
